Pop culture is a huge part of American culture. People often quote films and tv shows and use them as means of connecting to others. This has made things from films and television bleed into our mainstream culture as well. This includes, but is not limited to, costume pieces, phrases, and even cars. Cars from television and film oftentimes take on characters themselves, becoming recognizable pieces from the media. Here is a list of our favorite cars from pop culture.
The Flintmobile
Seen in box the animated show and the live action film, the Flintmobile is the car driven by the patriarch of the Flintstone family in The Flintstones. The stone car is the perfect vehicle to transport the prehistoric family. The car is a very iconic piece from the show, as it perfectly represents the fun nature of the show. It is a “time accurate” car, lacking an engine and merely being powered by Fred Flintstone’s feet power.
Ecto 1
This car is the perfect vehicle that carried the Ghostbusters around New York City in all of the iterations from the Ghostbusters franchise. The car is a unique style, being modeled after the dual model Cadillac Miller Meteor. This vehicle served as both an ambulance and a hearse. Since the Ghostbusters handle ghosts in the Big Apple, the unique car is perfect for their needs. The car is such an icon representing the film that it had its own reveal moment in the franchise’s recent reboot series.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
This car is so iconic to the film that it is in, it serves as the namesake to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The vehicle comes with its own theme song, sung throughout the movie by Dick Van Dyke and the rest of the cast. As Van Dyke’s character is known for his wacky mechanisms that he builds, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is no different. The car is equipped with many interesting features, such as wings and special tires that turn into floatation devices.
Herbie
This lovable Volkswagen Beetle has been seen in many different versions of the Herbie story. It first appeared in The Love Bug in 1969. The race car dons red, white, and blue stripes as number 53. It has served as the costar to many famous actors.
Mystery Machine
Arguably the most iconic vehicle from film and television history is the Mystery Machine. It can be seen in various shows and films depicting the detective work of Scooby Doo and the team at Mystery Inc. Starting with Scooby Doo, Where Are You, the van with psychedelic paint and images is a clear sign that something strange is going on but Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby Doo will get to the bottom of it!
