NASA has been in the works on developing an aircraft to fly in the atmosphere of Mars. The project follows up with the rover project where robotic cars have been evaluating the surface for signs of life.

NASA’s Copter Is Named “Ingenuity”

The helicopter’s purpose is to travel in the thin amount of air of Mars. The name was selected thanks to 17-year-old Vaneeza Rupani. The young space enthusiast had her name chosen out of 28,000 entries.

NASA had this to say:

“The ingenuity and brilliance of people working hard to overcome the challenges of interplanetary travel are what allow us all to experience the wonders of space exploration,” Rupani wrote in her essay, according to a news release by NASA. “Ingenuity is what allows people to accomplish amazing things, and it allows us to expand our horizons to the edges of the universe,”.

NASA Ingenuities Intention

The small helicopter is in development to give aerial support to future explorations. An examination from both the ground and the sky means that NASA can examine a whole spectrum that could not be accessed before. From wind speeds to higher levels of altitude, the copter will shed more insights into the inner workings of Mars.

From science-fiction to reality, technology has been able to achieve the impossible. Men walk on the Moon, rovers roam the lands. Now, the first-ever helicopter provides information as to the living conditions of the red planet.

For enthusiastic bird watchers, they might feel disappointment. For those who seek to expand their knowledge on Mars, the information can be unlimited. Space exploration is taking another huge step in delivering the adequate readings to further mankind.

May the new helicopter deliver us into a new age of information regarding our very own solar system. The possibilities are here to provide endless speculation…until its proven.
